Biography

Rep. Judy Morrison was first appointed to represent the 23rd district in August 1999 to replace Cliff Franklin, who resigned from the position.  She has since been re-elected three times to the district that contains parts of Shawnee and all of the city of Merriam.  Judy continues to serve as a Precinct Committeewoman, and has held that position since 1998.  She represents all Shawnee Precinct Committeewomen and Men as Secretary for the committee.

Morrison sits on the Federal and State Affairs Committee, the Utilities Committee, and is Vice-Chair of the Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism Committee in the Kansas House of Representatives.  Judy has also been appointed to seats on several influential boards, including the Persian Gulf War Veterans Health Initiative board, and the Disability Concerns Board.  Recently, Attorney General Phill Kline appointed Rep. Morrison to the Security and Firm Enforcement (SAFE) Task Force for Kansas. Judy also serves on the Governor's Council on Travel and Tourism.

The National Foundation for Women Legislators nominated her a team leader for criminal justice, terrorism, and substance abuse; she serves as president for the National Order for Women Legislators, and is on the criminal justice task force for the American Legislative Exchange Council.

Locally, Judy served on the board of the Northeast Johnson County Chamber of Commerce and the Shawnee Garden Club.  Rep. Morrison frequently poses as the "Shanna Panda," mascot on the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light The Night walk.  "Shanna Panda" also visits sick children in local hospitals.  The Morrisons founded the Shanna Morrison Memorial Rose Garden at Flanders Park in Shawnee.

Judy previously worked as an Executive Assistant at Ford Motor Company.  She and her husband Ken have been married for 46 years and have one daughter, Dr. Kenda Morrison.  Dr. Morrison graduated from the University of Kansas and is a consultant working with children with autism.  Their youngest daughter, Shanna, succumbed to Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 1988 at the age of 17.

Judy and Ken have lived in this community for nearly 40 years, and daughters Kenda and Shanna attended Shawnee Mission schools.
